Dal 19 gennaio al 3 febbraio 2026, Pınar Kayar ha ospitato Giulia Casartelli nel suo studio di Istanbul. Durante la sua permanenza, Giulia ha completato e presentato la serie di acquerelli 55 grotte e ha scritto questo testo:
Prima ho pensato che chi non accetta questo mondo non vi costruisce una casa.
Poi ho pensato che chi non accetta questo mondo non vi costruisce una casa, ma abita quelle degli altri.
Ora penso che chi non accetta questo mondo vi costruisce una casa.
Chi accetta questo mondo abita la grotta che gli viene offerta.
55 grotte è una serie di acquerelli raffiguranti 55 grotte che mi sono state offerte tra il 15 aprile 1986 e il 31 gennaio 2026 e nelle quali ho abitato.

1 La grotta è allo stesso tempo “la prima e l’ultima dimora”, osserva Bachelard ne La terra e il riposo. Un viaggio tra le immagini dell’intimità (Red!, 2013). Dimora di alcuni dei nostri antenati preistorici a Lascaux o a Chauvet, essa parla del significato dell’abitare umano. “L’atto di abitare comincia pressochè inevitabilmente quando si ha l’impressione di essere al riparo”, nota Bachelard. Abitare significa proteggersi dalle forze elementari e dalla violenza umana: significa ritirarsi in uno spazio delimitato, che ci strappa alla sconfinatezza del mondo, permettendoci di controllare l’emergere di minacce – animali, naturali o umane – che non possono più sorgere da qualsivoglia luogo, ma devono passare attraverso la soglia di un ingresso. E precisamente: “La cavità perfetta è un mondo chiuso”. E questo spazio chiuso non deve la sua forma o la sua conquista a mani umane; è donato direttamente dalla natura, sotto forma di una grazia soprannaturale: “La terra offre tane, rifugi e grotte” – mentre una casa implica la mediazione dell’atto di costruzione (mia traduzione dal francese).

At first I thought that people who do not accept this world do not build a home there.
Then I thought that people who do not accept this world do not build a home there, but live in someone else’s.
Now I think that people who do not accept this world build a home there.
People who accept this world live in the cave they are offered.
55 caves is a series of watercolours depicting 55 caves offered to me between 15 April 1986 and 31 January 2026, in all of which I have lived.

1 The cave “is both the first and the last dwelling place”, Bachelard notes in Earth and Reveries of Will. An Essay on the Imagination of Matter (Dallas Inst Humanities and Culture, 2002). Home to some of our distant prehistoric ancestors, at Lascaux or Chauvet, it speaks to the meaning of human dwelling. “The act of dwelling develops almost infallibly as soon as one has the impression of being sheltered”, Bachelard emphasizes. To inhabit is to protect oneself from the unleashing of elemental forces and from human violence; it is to retreat into a delimited space, which wrests us from the boundlessness of the world, and to control the emergence of threats – animal, natural, or human – that no longer come from just anywhere, but must use the precise interval of the entrance. And precisely: “The perfect cavity is a closed world.” And this enclosed space is not conquered by man, it is directly given by nature, in the form of an almost supernatural grace: "The earth offers dens, lairs, caves" – whereas the house implies the mediation of a construction (my translation from French).
